Five… new opponents
Four… new road trip destinations
Three… Erie County Derby dates
Two… World Cup doubleheaders
One… anxiously anticipated season

FC Buffalo’s fifth season is coming together nicely, as the National Premier Soccer League has released its dates for the 2014 season on Tuesday and the Wolves are preparing to put together a championship campaign for “five” our city.

Some highlights:
— We open the season against our rivals on Friday, May 16 in Erie against the Admirals in one of three Erie County Derby dates, before returning home to open the season with a Sunday, May 18 match against AFC Cleveland.

— Sunday, June 22 will be perhaps the biggest event of the summer, as FC Buffalo hosts Fort Pitt Regiment for an early afternoon match before a quick march down Hertel Avenue to watch the US World Cup match against Portugal at 6 p.m. with our friends at Mes Que.

— We’re also working with Mes Que to throw a massive party for the World Cup final on Sunday, July 13, which will also be our regular season finale. The Michigan Stars FC will be in town for a night match, their first against our Blitzers, which will kick off shortly after the final whistle of Brazil 2014.

— If you’re looking for a fun road trip, FC Buffalo will be away to Westfield Select (just outside Indianapolis) on the day of the Indy 500. Just saying.

The 2014 season also features a bit of realignment to the Great Lakes Conference playoffs structure, as we’ve been divided into Great Lakes East (FC Buffalo, Erie Admirals, Fort Pitt Regiment, AFC Cleveland) and Great Lakes West (Detroit City FC, Cincinnati Saints, Michigan Stars FC, Lansing United and Westfield Select).

The winners of those groups will join the Central Conference champion and a wild card club in the Midwest Region playoffs. The wild card will be granted to the team across the Midwest with the points-per-match rate in the region. Host city/cities are to be determined, but the Central hosted in 2013 and the playoffs have previously been settled on a rotating basis.
