Almost 900 votes out of the more than 2300 cast in our nickname contest requested one option be our first ever mascot.

When it came down to it, we didn’t have the heart to go against it.

(We expect you to follow through on your acceptance of a free ticket, Mr. Namesake)

It’s with gratitude to the passion of our growing fan base that we announce “Blitzers” as the proper nickname of FC Buffalo. Really, how could we not? If you as a supporter don’t like it, that’s fine — feel free to call us whatever you want. This is your team, and no one is going to take it away from you.

So, why Blitzers? Why not? The term blitz comes from the German word for lightning, which is all over our logo and the official flag of our beloved home, Buffalo. To go along with that, of course, is the fact that the majority of our staff comes from a background of broadcasting, journalism or English and CNN’s Wolf Blitzer is a well-respected representative of Western New York who remains devoted to his long-suffering hometown.

We hope this choice doesn’t temper anyone’s enthusiasm for our home opener, which is 3 p.m. Saturday, May 29 at Robert E. Rich All-High Stadium. There are only precious few days to snag our inaugural season supporter’s package that includes a season ticket, shirt and scarf for only $50. It would be a massive help to our fledgling club if you’d buy in.

For our city,

The FC Buffalo staff

  2. Great stuff guys, I’m really proud of the way you took over the reigns of the NPSL group and continued the tradition there. Hope you’ll have as much success as we had our first year as QCFC.
