Comeback comes up short at Detroit City in NISA Independent Cup opener

FC Buffalo began its 2021 National Independent Soccer Association Independent Cup run with a 3-1 loss to Detroit City at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, Michigan, on Wednesday.

The short-handed Wolves trailed 2-0 at halftime but fired out of the gates with a second-half that caught DCFC off guard, Habib Famuditimi and Hunter Walsh teaming up to produce Jayson Repine’s hammered near-post finish in the 56th minute.

Le Rouge would answer to make it 3-1, but FCB looked set to get a chance to make it 3-2 late when Hunter Walsh was pulled down in the box. Alas, no penalty was given.

Detroit entered the match unbeaten in 18 matches dating back to September 2020, having won the NISA Spring Championship and last season’s Fall Championship.

The Wolves’ next two Independent Cup games are in Buffalo: Saturday, July 24 versus Livonia City and Wednesday, July 28 versus Cleveland SC.
