FC Buffalo set the table for a massive week in their USL W League and USL League Two seasons by sweeping a Saturday doubleheader vs Erie Sports Center FC at Penn State Behrend.
The men rode a Luis Felipe Santos goal and Jack Root clean sheet to a 1-0 win over ESCFC, then the women broke a halftime deadlock through a Carissima Cutrona brace and Ava Plezia stoppage-time goal to win 3-0.
Jacobo Obradors had an assist for the men, while Gianna Tuzzolino set up two of the women’s goals and Chloe Japic recorded an assist as well.
The wins improve both teams playoff hopes, and this week will go a long way in determining postseason probabilities for the Blue and Gold.
Both teams have away days on Tuesday, with the women off to Rochester for a 7pm kickoff against Flower City 1872. Tuesday’s hosts beat FCB at home earlier this season and the women are seeking revenge in addition to improved table footing.
FCB are seven points back but have two matches-in-hand on table-leading Pittsburgh Riveters, who head to Buffalo on Sunday. Steel City have one more point than our Blitzers, and visit us later this season. The top two teams in each division make the playoffs.
On the men’s side, it’s a longer drive to Akron City on Tuesday for a 7pm kickoff. Akron, our former NPSL conference foes, have won once, lost once, and drawn three times this season. They’re seven points back of us, and we hold the second playoff place at the moment — three points back of Steel City. Akron will visit Buffalo on Saturday as part of our doubleheader.
