FC Buffalo go top after win in Toledo

FC Buffalo’s men went atop the USL2 Great Forest Division table following a 2-1 win over Toledo Villa at Paul Hotmer Field in Ohio on Saturday.

Toledo entered the game 1-0-0 on their young season while our visitors were looking for a third win in four USL2 games, three coming away from home.

Jacobo Obradors’ first goal in an FC Buffalo shirt gave us a lead before the game was 20 minutes old, as Javier Gonzalez Bucarey slipped the ball to Bendix Bennetzen. The Dane spotted college teammate and FCB captain Ashton Jell, who fired a first-time cross toward the the spot.

Luis Felipe Santos’ strike was denied by a remarkable Toledo save, but Obradors was on the doorstep to slot the rebound.

Toledo answered before halftime, setting the stage for a terrific second half.

The match-winning goal was a thing of beauty, as Jonas Driesch peeled away from his runner and stepped into the midfield to break up Villa possession. Bennetzen drove the loose ball forward to Bucarey, who hit a surgical pass through three defenders to Santos, who slipped a smooth finish off the far post.

FCB’s 3W-1L record puts us atop the division on both points (9) and points-per-game (2.25) heading into a huge rematch with Toledo at Coyer Field in Buffalo next Saturday. Come out and support the boys.
