Erie rout puts bow on strong season

FC Buffalo clobbered Erie Sports Center FC 4-1 on Sunday in front of a strong crowd at Coyer Field, capping off a seven-win season that saw the side finish a point back of the USL2 playoffs.

Coach Carl Kennedy’s first season saw the team finish one point back of Great Forest Division winners Steel City for an automatic spot in the postseason. Five division winners and three runners-up from the Central Conference made the playoffs, and FCB’s 23 points and 1.92 points-per-game lagged just behind the 25 points collected by Great Lakes Division runners-up Midwest United and Great Plains Division runners-up Peoria City.

Heading into Sunday, FC Buffalo is the only team in the Central Conference with seven wins and without a playoff spot, taking another step after going 5-3-4 last season.

Ali Alomari had two goals and an assist in the win over Erie. Thomas Brooks scored a header and won a penalty converted by Matheus Spina, who also had an assist in the win. Erie’s Espoir Mayele ruined the clean sheet deep in stoppage time on a hot night at home.

Jacobo Obradors finished as the only player to appear in all 12 league matches this season, while Alomari’s red-hot mini-run matched him with Luis Felipe Santos with three USL2 goals in a season where the finishes were spread widely and almost evenly, too.

Ashton Jell led the team in assists and minutes played, his 924 minutes just ahead of Landon Hungerford (908) and Jack Root (900).

The club will regroup almost immediately as we plans our short- and long-term future. Expect significant updates in the very near future.
