“Like” the Rust Belt Derby on Facebook today. “Like” The Situation Room as well. And us.

Three supporters groups in the Great Lakes Region have manufactured a title worth winning as NPSL clubs in three cities will compete in the inaugural Rust Belt Derby during their regular season matches in 2012.

Our own The Situation Room has partnered with AFC Cleveland’s Sixth City Syndicate and Detroit City FC’s Northern Guard Supporters to sponsor the event, which features six games over the season. While each team plays its RBD opponents thrice, just one home and one road game per match-up will count towards the Derby.

“There’s a great kinship between the cities of Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo,” said FC Buffalo owner and general manager Nick Mendola. “Our areas have reclaimed the formerly pejorative term of ‘Rust Belt’ in the name of perseverance and FC Buffalo will fight hard to win the initial Rust Belt Derby Cup.”
